Biography - KAMA PRANA

Kama is a versatile violinist, Celtic and World fiddler, composer, dancer, and wellness professional based in California’s Coachella Valley. Known for her unique sound and vibrant cultural fusions, she integrates Scottish, classical, Middle Eastern influences, and spiritual practices into performances that uplift and connect.


Born in upstate New York’s Adirondack Mountains, Kama’s musical journey began at age five when a violin performance moved her to declare it “chases the blues away.” She trained intensively for nine years with Carl Kokes on violin and multiple instruments and later refined her expressive, gypsy and schmaltzy styles with Ioan Harea and Walter Schwede. As a teen, she performed in orchestras and chamber groups while building a solo career playing for destination weddings.


A passionate dancer, Kama trained in modern, jazz, Bob Fosse, Broadway, ballet, bellydance, and world street and folk styles. She performed as an onstage violinist for dance companies and as a jazz dance soloist/company member in the touring production of CHICAGO. She earned a degree in Violin Performance and Modern Dance from Crane School of Music (SUNY Potsdam), serving as associate concertmaster of the Crane Symphony Orchestra.


In 2015, Kama relocated to the Coachella Valley, California, where she has served as a First Section Violinist with the Coachella Valley Symphony since 2016. She performs with Scottish sessions, and has toured as electric violinist/fiddler with Grammy-nominated Crix Poland’s bands (California Celts, Mod Professor, and others). She is a longtime member and performer with the Scottish Fiddlers of Los Angeles.


Deeply drawn to cultural fusion, Kama studies Arabic maqam, Indian ragas, and Sufi Tarab improvisation techniques. In 2022 she composed and premiered “Sharqi of Shetland”—a Scottish Shetland Reel in Arabic Maqam D Hijaz—with ensembles including the Julian Bluegrass Band and Scottish Fiddlers of Los Angeles.


A 1,000-hour Certified Yoga Teacher and Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) Yoga instructor, Kama pioneered SUP Yoga programs in New York and teaches PoolBellydance, chair yoga, and dance therapy for seniors. She is also a Certified Personal Trainer specializing in corrective exercise. A Certified Animal Energy® and Animal Reiki practitioner, she works with animals and their humans to correct imbalances. Her passion for music therapy led her to play her violin for the elderly in nursing homes and care facilities.


Kama teaches violin, cello, ukulele, piano, and solfege at The Music School in Palm Springs and continues to perform, collaborate, and share her holistic approach to music, movement, and wellness. and spiritual growth, Grateful for a life rich in performance, education, she brings integrity, warmth, and heartfelt expression to every endeavor.
